Honoring Dr. Buford Norman: A Legacy of Language, Music, and Generosity Dr. Buford Norman gives with both scholarly conviction and personal devotion, honoring a lifelong love of music, language, and culture, and the legacy of his late wife, Dr. Elizabeth Joiner, a pioneer in foreign language education. Their shared passion for literature, art, and learning now lives on through Dr. Norman’s extraordinary gifts to the University Libraries, School of Music, and College of Education. His recent contribution to the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections includes a rare, meticulously curated collection on 17th-century librettist Philippe Quinault, representing decades of research in Columbia and France. This gift allows students and scholars to explore new connections across music, literature, and history. “Libraries are sanctuaries of thought,” Dr. Norman says. “Places for pleasure, for work, for life.” Beyond the Libraries, his generosity supports opera scholarships, student travel, and early music programs, as well as the Elizabeth G. Joiner Bilingualism Matters Fund, which honors his wife’s groundbreaking work. Through these lasting contributions, Dr. Norman continues to inspire intellectual curiosity and cross-disciplinary collaboration, celebrating the enduring power of the arts, languages, and education.
